”This ”liberty training” Annie taught me has really changed my life in the most meaningful of ways. It’s a perspective that applies to all aspects of my life – a perspective on life itself really. And I see now that it’s hardly about training at all anymore; I realize it hasn’t been for quite awhile. The ”training” – ”play” as I rightfully call it – is simply an expression of what goes far deeper.

As I grow and learn more and more from the horse, the more I realize it was never about ”what I could do”, ”how I could ride”, or ”what I could train” – rather it has always been, whether I knew it or not, about who I had become – who I was becoming. It has always been about relationship – an unexplainable love for these amazing beings – a love shared between horse and human. Horses, when we let them, bring out the very best in us – the kindest, accepting, most compassionate parts of ourselves. It is only when we let the need to impress other humans get in the way of our love for horses that fear, pleasure, dominance, & anger begin to direct our actions/reactions and spark a ”need” within us to control the horse. As I open myself up to the horse more and more, the more I realize that it never was and never will be the ”show” that matters – it is the lessons learned from loving a horse that have shaped who I am… that have made me better.

I have never been the ”teacher” – I am and always will be the humble student. What are the horses teaching me now? What insight is Annie bestowing on me today?
Lately, I have come to understand on a deeper level than even before that we are all equal. That we must see each other for who we really are if we are to treat each other with the respect and love we deserve. I thought I understood this well before, but I am beginning to see that there is so much more meaning behind these words than I imagined.

While this may seem to be a simple concept – one I thought I’ve had a grasp on for many years – there are new layers, deeper meanings, that I am only now opening my eyes too. It is hard to explain as, at this point, these new perspectives are hard for me to even fully hold on to. It is a grand revelation, I can tell, but one that must come in time. These new truths challenge even more ”norms” just as Annie’s previous lessons challenged the traditional world I was so accustom to.
It is a wonder: the wisdom horses have to give us. Open yourself to it – seek it! And we may all recognize this truth I think all horse lovers know deep down in their hearts:
It’s not about the training – it’s not about the riding -
It’s about the horse.”
